The 214 Girls Summer Development Series (Skills Sessions) is designed to build strong fundamentals, game IQ, and confidence through high-rep, position-specific training led by current college players and 214 alumni who understand the women’s game and the path to the next level.
Each session focuses on a core skill theme, blending technical instruction, competitive drills, and game-like situations to help players grow week over week.
June 11- Session 1: “Foundations First”
Focus: Stick Skills, Footwork & Athletic Movement
Overview: This session establishes a strong foundation for the summer.
- Proper throwing, catching, and cradling mechanics
- Ground ball technique with legal protection and body positioning
- Footwork, balance, and change of direction
- Confidence-building competitive drills
June 18- Session 2: “Own Your Matchup”
Focus: Dodging & Creating Offensive Advantage
Overview: Players learn how to beat defenders using footwork, timing, and field awareness.
- Split dodges, roll dodges, and change-of-direction moves
- Attacking from the top, wings, and behind
- Reading defenders and creating opportunities for teammates
- 1v1 and small-group offensive reps
June 25- Session 3: “Building the Defensive Edge”
Focus: Defensive Footwork, Body Position & Legal Checks
Overview: Players develop the skills needed to play strong, disciplined defense.
- Defensive stance and approach angles
- Body positioning and footwork for containment
- Legal checking and recovery technique
- 1v1 and small-sided defensive situations
July 9- Session 4: “Shooters vs. Stoppers”
Focus: Shooting Techniques & Goalie Skills
Overview: This session focuses on shot mechanics and goalie fundamentals within the women’s game.
- Overhand shooting mechanics and accuracy
- Shot placement and finishing under pressure
- Goalie positioning, angles, and save technique
- Live shooter vs. goalie reps with coaching feedback
July 16- Session 5: “From the Draw to the Cage”
Focus: Passing, Sliding, Communication, & Game-like Speed
Overview: This session emphasizes moving the ball quickly and playing with purpose.
- Draw fundamentals: stance, timing, and basic techniques
- Boxing out, reaction time and quick outlet passes
- Passing on the move and leading teammates
- Defensive slides to shut down a fast break
July 23- Session 6: “Think Fast, Play Smart”
Focus: Decision-Making, Spacing & Competing
Overview: Players apply skills in realistic game situations.
- 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 situational awareness and tactics
- Man Up/Man Down opportunities
- Emphasis on spacing, timing, and smart decisions
- Live coaching and teachable moments to encourage creativity and confidence
July 30- Session 7: “Finish Strong”
Focus: Skill Reinforcement, Confidence & Competing
Overview: A high-energy capstone session that reinforces everything learned throughout the summer.
- Fast-paced stickwork warm-up reviewing core fundamentals
- Competitive skill stations (dodging, shooting, defense)
- Small-sided games with emphasis on effort and teamwork
- Encourages confidence, leadership, and having fun playing lacrosse
